UBC Okanagan Data Centre Cooling
The existing Library Data Centre’s air-cooled split DX (direct expansion) cooling systems had begun to fail after approximately 7 years of operation. The customer required a new cooling system for the data centre with a lower lifecycle cost and reduced maintenance versus the existing indoor/outdoor-split cooling equipment, therefore a chilled glycol-based cooling system was fitted to the data centre. Construction of the cooling system upgrade was phased over several months to allow IT technicians to relocate existing computer equipment into and out of vertical racks in order to install chilled glycol in-row hot aisle/cold aisle coolers at intervals between the racks of IT equipment.
Chilled glycol cooling fluid was obtained from a nearby building that produces surplus/byproduct chilled water during fall, winter and spring, and the chilled glycol system now provides primary cooling for the data centre, while the existing air-cooled equipment provides 100% backup. Heat rejection from the Data Centre was coupled into the campus’ 2-pipe low-temperature district energy ring for recycling and reuse.
